TMJ/TMD and bruxism

TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, disorder also known as TMD is a condition that impacts the hinges that connect the jaw to the head, and which is often very painful, and can cause problems such as

  • Jaw pain,
  • Sore cheeks,
  • Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism),
  • Tension headaches,
  • Neck and shoulder pain,
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and
  • Difficulty or pain when chewing.

TMD is a far-reaching, painful disorder, which can impact everything from an ability to enjoy physical activities, to oral health, to necessary everyday actions such as speaking and eating. Between 5% and 10% of the world’s adults have some form of TMJ disorder.

There are some conservative treatments to manage symptoms such as mouthguards, muscle relaxants, and pain management medication; however, one of the most successful treatments is medical botox.

Botox partially paralyzes and relaxes muscles, so when it is injected into the jaw muscles by an experienced, certified injector, it can relieve tension and the pain associated with it, getting to the root of the problem.
